shamrocks, beer, bloating

a good weekend, fun-wise. not so much blood sugar-wise.

worm came to visit to celebrate st patrick's day and it was fantastic! we pub crawled, feasted, and layed around on the couch. but i think that the lack of activity combined with the fatty food and alcohol created a lethal combination for my blood sugar. over the past three days, i've had several readings in the 250s. i am waiting to see if this truly is just related to my gluttony over the weekend, or if it has more to do with other factors. gosh, i love to wait and see!

what other factors could be elevating my blood sugars? when i went to see the endocrinologist last week, he told me that it could be my period. he said that the week before and during, blood sugars can be higher, whereas the week after, they can be lower. this could explain not only what's been going on for the past few days (i got my period today), but also why i went so low last month. still, there is no real explanation for why my period would be affecting me so violently now since it never has in the past, but like the doctor said, it could just have started happening for no reason.

speaking of the visit to the endocrinologist, my new a1c of 6.6 was so exciting! the doctor told me that i shouldn't shoot for too much lower, since i would probably run the risk of too many lows. 6.5 has always been my goal, so i am happy enough with a 6.6. the coolest thing about my a1c is that they don't need to take vials of my blood for it anymore! instead, it was a simple finger prick. the nurse filled up a tiny tiny tube with my blood, and then the results were updated into my file before my appt was over, so my doctor was actually able to go over them with me! i was so excited! i always have hated waiting for a1c results in the mail... it reminds me of waiting for a high school report card that i know will not have the best results.

my doctor also gave me some reassuring news on weight gain. apparently, a ton of his patients have gained a few pounds over the winter months, so he expects that things will get better come spring. i hope so. i have been feeling pretty sausage-like (ie. my pants feel like a casing) lately. i've been trying to cut the carbs (well, other than this weekend), but it's not really helping. one thing that is helping is my new refusal to step on the scale. i figure that i'm anxious enough already. no need to push it any further.
